Common Settings - Discovery
To access this page, click on the Common Settings node in the Discovery tree. The initial settings of the Manager/Agent discovery can be performed using this page.
- By default, the eG Enterprise system discovers components using their IP addresses only. This implies that the IP address of a component will be automatically set as that component's nick name in the eG Enterprise system. This is why, the Index components using flag is set to IP address by default. You can alternatively select the Host name option from the Index components using list. If this is done, then, when a component is discovered, the eG manager queries the Domain Name System to resolve an IP address to a domain name, and then assigns this domain name (or host name) as the nick name of that component during discovery. Use the Host name option only if the target environment is configured properly to use the Domain Name System (i.e., both name to IP address and IP address to name mappings are specified in the DNS).
- To discover more than one component at the same time, set the Discover multiple components in the same time flag to Yes.
- Also, if you choose to Index components using the Host name, you have the option of performing discovery itself using the host name - i.e., using the host name (and not IP address) to represent discovered components across the eG user interface. This is the ideal way to go if your environment is DHCP-enabled, as the IP address of a server may keep changing often in such environments. To indicate that your environment is DHCP-enabled and that you prefer to perform discovery using the host name, set the Is your environment DHCP-enabled? flag to Yes. By default, this flag is set to No.
The Re-discovery period determines the frequency with which the discovery process executes. This frequency governs how quickly the eG manager is able to discover components that may have been newly added to the target environment.
Note:
The Is your environment DHCP-enabled? flag setting becomes effective only if the Index components using flag is set to Host.
- The selection from the Index components using drop-down and the Is your environment DHCP-enabled flag setting indicated therein do not just apply to general component discovery, but also to the following types of discovery that can be performed using the DISCOVERY page:
- the discovery of vSphere/ESX ;
- the discovery of IBM pSeries;
- the discovery of Public clouds;
- the discovery of RHEV servers
- By default, in the Selected Component types for discovery section, all the components that can be discovered will be listed. This section can be customized, to discover only a particular component type:
- Click on the Configure Components for Discovery (
) icon.
- The Select components to be discovered page will then appear. By default, All option will be choosen. To customize the discovery, select the components you wish to discover from the list. For example, if you wish to discover only the JBoss and JRun components from the application server, then select the Application Server from the Category list, and then choose JBoss and JRun from the Components list. Finally click on the Apply button.
- Now you can see only the specific components listed in the Selected Component types for discovery section.
- Discovery of components is typically based on the port number(s) on which the components are listening. Each component type supported by eG Enterprise is mapped to a set of port numbers, which is displayed in the TCP ports for application discovery section. You can, if need be, change the default port preferences mapped to each component type. For this, just click on the Ports that need to be changed and make changes. A component can be associated with more than one port number and these numbers have to be separated by a comma ( , ).
